Visual Design and Cognition in List-Style Open-Ended Questions in Web Probing

Previous research reveals that the visual design of open-ended questions should match response task so respondents can infer expected format. Based on a web survey including specific probes in list-style question format, we experimentally tested effects varying numbers answer boxes several indicators quality. Our results showed using multiple small instead one large box had positive impact number and variety themes mentioned, as well conciseness responses to probes. We found no effect relevance risk item non-response. our findings, recommend convey format improve quality This study makes valuable contribution field probing, extends concept questions, provides deeper understanding how features affect cognitive processes surveys.
